Berlin, June 30th 2018: DaWanda closes the doors of its marketplace the 30th of August after nearly 12 years. This step forms a joint decision of DaWanda´s executive team and its shareholders.

“It wasn´t an easy decision to take - we invested a lot of heart into building the marketplace.” says Claudia Helming, founder and managing director of DaWanda. “Together with our community we have established Do-it-yourself and positioned handmade products as a new category within ecommerce in Europe. We feel proud of this achievement! Nevertheless, more and more we had to admit that we wouldn’t be able on a stand-alone basis to drive further growth to marketplace. We have act now to ensure the incomes and busineses of our sellers in the longterm as well as their growth.“

In order to offer their buyers and sellers a new home for vintage and handmade designs a referral agreement has been put in place in between DaWanda and Etsy after weighting different options: both parties are currently programming an import tool together, which will enable DaWanda sellers to move their shops, inventory and shop rating to Etsy easy and free of charge. The tool will be available by beginning of next week.

“We share a common vision, same values and goals.“ Says Claudia Helming. „DaWanda and Etsy support passionate crafters and professional designers offering their unique products and therefore offer buyers an alternative to mass made. We offer our sellers the door to the world by entering this agreement with Etsy.”

Nearly 35 million buyers shop on Etsy, creating a large and global audience for DaWanda´s sellers. Etsy has eight offices globally, including Berlin.

Linda Findley Kozlowski, Etsy’s Chief Operating Officer, commented, “. We greatly admire the work that the DaWanda team has done to help buyers and sellers celebrate creativity. We’re delighted to welcome their passionate community into our global marketplace, and excited to bring more unique German goods to buyers both in Germany and around the world. In addition to working to make this migration seamless for DaWanda’s users in the coming months, we plan to continue to invest in our German business so that we can empower creative entrepreneurs and offer buyers a unique and engaging shopping experience.“

Seller can start to move their shops and items to Etsy´s platform with the import tool by beginning of next week; up until end of August trading on DaWanda´s platform is also still possible. With cessation of the marketplace visitors of DaWanda´s platform will be redirected to Etsy´s marketplace.

Employees of DaWanda have already been informed about the closure of the company as a result of the cessation of the marketplace operations. They will receive a windinge agreement and the majority has left the company already. DaWanda´s customer care team will be available to buyers and sellers up until end of August.

In the weeks coming, both companies will work together to ensure sellers have the best start possible on Etsy global marketplace and DaWanda´s community will find a new home.
